Cross-Border Truck Safety

Mexico-Domiciled Commercial Passenger Carrier Study

Sponsor: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in progress

The principal objective of this research project is to assess the safety risk of Mexico-domiciled commercial passenger carriers to support future decision-making regarding the provision of a regular route of scheduled passenger transport services in the U.S. by Mexico-domiciled carriers under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The study will compare U.S. and Mexican commercial passenger transport regulations related to driver, vehicle and carrier requirements for in-country and international operation. Researchers will also evaluate existing programs, facilities and support systems for enforcing these regulations and recommend improvements as needed.

Binational Commercial Vehicle and Driver Databases

Sponsor: Southwest University Transportation Center, 2003

This research focused on two of the most critical data elements in the border-crossing system: commercial driver and vehicle information. The study team identified potentially valuable tractor, trailer and driver data components not currently available or accessible to border stakeholders and proposed how they might be integrated into overarching systems. The strategies recommended enable the development of binational driver and vehicle databases that will ensure safe and efficient processing of border traffic and trade.

El Paso Regional Transportation Data Warehouse and Bi-National Traveler Information System

Sponsor: Texas Transportation Institute, in progress

Aimed at providing El Paso travelers with real-time traffic information, including border crossing wait times, to make better route selections before and during a trip, the Regional Transportation Data Warehouse is a state-of-the art research and planning tool based on real-time, on-demand traffic information. The technology under development will allow transportation agencies to make better traffic management decisions by recording real-time traffic flow patterns and driver decisions. When completed, the Data Warehouse will allow drivers to use web, cell phone and global positioning system (GPS) tools to receive maps showing preferred traffic routes and travel times during road construction, detours and traffic accidents, as well as travel alerts via text messages.
