TTI Council Member, Amadeo Saenz, Jr.
Amadeo Saenz, Jr., P.E., is the executive director of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) as of October 1, 2007. Under Texas Transportation Commission direction, he manages, directs and implements TxDOT policies, programs and operating strategies. He also represents TxDOT before the Texas Legislature and other entities.
A transportation engineer with 29 years of experience in the public sector, he joined TxDOT in 1978 in the Pharr District following his graduation from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He became district engineer in the Pharr District in 1993 and was in charge of all department activities in an eight-county region.
From November, 2001 to September, 2007, Saenz served as TxDOT's assistant executive director for engineering operations. He was instrumental in encouraging use of all financial options to build transportation projects, empowering local and regional leaders to solve transportation problems, increasing competition to reduce costs, and making consumer-driven decisions.
Saenz, a native of Hebbronville, is a past member of the Laredo and Pharr Rotary clubs and was active with the McAllen-area Boy Scouts. He served on the Civil Engineering External Advisory Committee for the University of Texas as Austin. He owns and operates a small cattle ranch in South Texas and enjoys horseback riding and hunting. Saenz and his wife, Geraldine, have two children.
