The Texas Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, is privileged to host the 33rd meeting of the Southwest Geotechnical Engineers Conference which will be held April 21-24, 2008, in Corpus Christi, Texas. During the conference we will discuss many topics we hope you will find interesting, educational, timely and useful to your daily work.

All meetings will be held in the Omni Corpus Christi Marina Tower. A hot breakfast will be provided at the conference. Lunch and dinner will give attendees the opportunity to explore the Texas coast and enjoy the many sites of Corpus Christi.

Registration Fees

Online registration is no longer available for this conference. On-site registration will be available immediately prior to the event.

Event Management & Planning (EM&P) cannot invoice; therefore, payment of the conference registration fee must be received prior to admission to the conference.

For payment processing purposes, the vendor identification number for TTI-EM&P is 37277277275000. The federal identification number is 74-2270624.

You may pay your registration fee by check, money order, or credit card. Please make checks or money orders payable to TTI-GEO08 and mail your payment to EM&P. EM&P also accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards.

Cancellations

Only cancellations received in writing by EM&P by 5:00 p.m. April 4, 2008, will be refunded based on the schedule below, less a $25 handling fee. No refunds will be made after April 4, 2008.

Port of Corpus Christi Tour

A field trip will be taken to the Port of Corpus Christi. The tour will include a presentation of exploration, design and construction issues related to the expansion of the port, followed by a tour of the facility. Transportation will be provided from the hotel to the port and back. Due to security regulations, individuals wishing to participate in the field trip will need to provide their full name, driver's license number and state to Kelly Hoffman, KHOFFMA@dot.state.tx.us or (512) 416-2278.

Speaker Information

If you are interested in making a presentation at the conference, please contact Daniel Alzamora at (720) 963-3214 or Daniel.alzamora@fhwa.dot.gov. Please provide the presentation title, description and give an estimation of the time necessary to cover your topic. No formal papers are required. You will be requested to submit a one page abstract for inclusion in the conference materials. Handouts are strongly encouraged and it is recommended that at least 75 copies be provided. You will be notified when your presentation is to be scheduled. The submission deadline is April 1, 2008.

Hotel Reservations

The Omni Corpus Christi – Marina Tower is holding a block of rooms for our use at the nightly rate of $85.00 single for government, $120.00 all others. We encourage everyone who needs a sleeping room to make reservations immediately. We anticipate the rooms will be booked quickly.

Reservations should be made by April 7, 2008 to receive the discounted rates. After this date, rooms may be available at a higher rate. Parking

The Omni Corpus Christi – Marina Tower provides complimentary parking. Valet parking is also available for a fee.

Shuttle/Taxi Service and Driving Directions

If you need transportation from the airport, complimentary hotel shuttle service is available 4:30 am - Midnight daily. Call from the baggage area and allow aproximately 15 - 20 minutes for the shuttle to arrive.

Taxi service is also available for a fee of $18 one way.

Port of Corpus Christi

The 5th largest deep-water port in the United States. The Port's Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center offers an incredible view of the city and ship traffic.

Texas State Aquarium

Corpus Christi Beach. Take an aquatic journey from the shore to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Thousands of animals representing over 300 species are found within 700,000 gallons of fun and fascination. Educational and children's programs daily.

The Watergarden

A scenic rest area with dancing fountains on the grounds of the American Bank Center.

Cole Park

A sprawling 43-acre park along Ocean Drive offering a spectacular view of Corpus Christi Bay. The Kids Place playground is crawling with activity.

Corpus Christi Marina

Scenic bayfront area bustling with activity from private yachts and sightseeing boats to water sport rentals and waterside restaurants. Visitors may buy fresh shrimp right off the boats or take a front row seat to watch the colorful sailboat regatta.

Downtown Seawall

Impressive waterfront wall and promenade. Bicycle, roller blade or just stroll and people-watch. Striking Miradores del Mar provide visitors with shade along the way.

Harbor Bridge

The second tallest bridge in Texas spans the Port and connects Corpus Christi Beach to the downtown area.

Ocean Drive
