2014 ITED Workshop
Economic Census Workshop
Wednesday April 9th – 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
This workshop, which is presented by TTI, will be limited to 45 registered participants and will cost $25 to attend.
The Economic Census products of the U.S. Census Bureau provide critical data to assist transportation professionals in analyzing market conditions and making investment decisions. While some of elements of the Economic Census are widely utilized by the transportation community, many practitioners do not understand how the data sets could advance their planning, policy, and management activities. This workshop will introduce participants to Economic Census products, focusing on the products most relevant to transportation planning.
The workshop content includes an overview of where the data are located, how to access them, and some example applications. The workshop will also include a presentation on the development of a Transportation User's Guide to the Economic Census, funded as a NCHRP "Quick Response" Project (Task 119). The workshop is intended for transportation planning professionals who are interested in leveraging the Economic Census products in general planning activities. Participants will walk away with hands-on experience in accessing the Economic Census products and an understanding of how the data can improve their transportation planning documents. The course format is a mix of presentations about the Economic Census products and hands-on instructions regarding accessing the data.
Presented by Stacey Bricka of Texas A&M Transportation Institute and Donald Ludlow of Cambridge Systematics.
2014 ITED Professional Tours
Industry Tour: International Inland Port of Dallas
Wednesday April 9th – 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
This tour, which is presented by University of North Texas Center for Economic Development and Research, will be limited to 45 registered participants and will cost $20 to attend.
The International Inland Port of Dallas (IIPOD) is a public private partnership serving as the third phase of development in the North Texas region's emergence as a key logistics and distribution center (along with DFW International Airport and Alliance Texas). Initiated with the UP's investment of a major intermodal facility in 2005, and despite the slow down in industrial development associated with the Great Recession, IIPOD now covers more than 7,000 acres with 12 million square feet of industrial development built or under construction. Boasting rail services by the BN and UP and access to five interstate highways, IIPOD hosts facilities for FedEx, BMW, Whirlpool, Home Depot, Quaker Oats, Unilever and other major businesses. The tour will take a limited number of conference attendees (limited to first 45 attendees who sign up) to visit key logistics facilities demonstrating how inland ports are an increasingly important supply chain element and can promote regional economic development. Participants will be able to engage with industry and economic development professionals that will include en-route briefings and question/answer sessions. This tour is being organized by Center for Economic Development, University of North Texas.
