Transportation Sustainability Research

Sustainability is an area of emerging interest in the transportation sector. Sustainability attempts to address environmental, social and economic concerns in an integrated manner. The Air Quality Program performs cutting-edge research on sustainability as it relates to transportation. In addition to planning and policy issues related to sustainability, the Program also focuses on the quantification and application of sustainability principles. Specific focus areas for sustainability research include:

  • performance measurement for sustainability
  • development and quantification of sustainability indicators and performance measures
  • application of decision-making approaches and methods
  • corridor level sustainability analyses
  • sustainability frameworks for transportation agencies targeting sustainability through strategic planning
  • conducting workshops and outreach
