Researchers specializing in both safety and traffic operations established a driving route on the Texas A&M University campus which included existing crosswalks and ones installed specifically for the project. The crosswalks varied in the pattern of markings used. Research participants drove the course and indicated when they noticed a crosswalk. Researchers also authored a guide book for engineering practitioners to use when evaluating the effectiveness of novel traffic control devices intended for pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
