In this effort, TTI’s instrumented vehicle was used to collect data on the freeway merging and exiting
behavior of drivers in the Dallas area. The driving course led drivers on and off freeways along ramps that varied in geometric design. During the two hour drive, the instrumented vehicle collected data on steering, acceleration, and braking. The driving data was compared to traffic counter and LIDAR data collected at sites in Texas, Pennsylvania and Kansas, and the findings of the research will be used to support modifications to national freeway ramp design standards.
