K-8 traffic safety education program implementation

This project produced a new Traffic Safety Education supplemental curriculum for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The supplement is designed to: 1) inform pre-drivers of appropriate behaviors that will reduce their current and future crash risk; 2) encourage pre-drivers to adopt the values of safety, economy and civility in current and future interactions with vehicles; 3) encourage pre-drivers to share their knowledge and values with their parents and other adults; and 4) encourage pre-drivers to realize that with knowledge of appropriate behaviors and values they can make a difference in the future quality of life for our society. This program extends the “knowledge based” approach to traffic safety where students learn to recognize hazards and the rules required to operate in the roadway system to one that is “value based.” The study included extensive literature review and crash analysis for the target age group.
