Movement of Hazardous Materials

Description

Rail transportation plays a major role in the movement of hazardous materials. The events of September 11, 2001, and the real possibility of future attacks have raised the concern level for rail transportation of hazardous materials and the safety of people and property in the event of such an incident. There is also the possibility of a rail accident involving hazardous materials.

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Rail Research Group focuses on potential means of reducing the risk of transporting hazardous materials by rail by developing a better understanding of the safety and security externality and proposing a more comprehensive approach to the way that hazardous materials are handled.
