Decision makers often call on TTI with transportation policy questions and requests for information.

The Strategic Transportation Solutions Center

With the depth and breadth of TTI’s expertise in all facets of transportation, it is natural that decision makers call on the Institute’s experts with transportation policy questions and requests for information. In September 2009, TTI began to respond to these rapidly increasing requests through the establishment of the Strategic Transportation Solutions Center. Recognizing the worth of independent, unbiased research and information in addressing today’s transportation challenges, support for the Center’s activities has been provided by the Texas Legislature.

Center Activities

Since its initiation, the Center has coordinated a substantial number of responses to a variety of Texas Legislative Committees during the 2010 interim session public hearings, in the development of responses to interim charges from the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House, and during the 82nd Regular Session.

The range of subjects is broad — from a variety of safety topics to a range of issues dealing with financing the state’s transportation system.  Instances of documents prepared or testimony presented is available on this website, sorted either by topic or recipient of the information.

The Strategic Transportation Solutions Center also supports the TTI mission of identifying evolving topics and strategic issue areas to be incorporated into a visionary research agenda that is important to transportation professionals and policy leaders.  While to date, the Center has focused on statewide issues, there also is an interest in serving the needs and demands of transportation decision makers at all levels and locations, as well as collaborating with other public and private entities in Texas and around the U.S. Most states face the same obstacles and challenges as Texas. As TTI researchers provide useful information for Texas, it likely has application in those other states or may be applicable at local or regional levels as well.

Center activities utilize experienced TTI researchers who have distinguished themselves as subject matter experts and national leaders in their field. TTI’s Agency Director Dennis Christiansen and Executive Associate Director Bill Stockton are also actively involved in overseeing Center activities and priorities.
