TTI researchers have assisted the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in the development and implementation of a comprehensive travel survey program that is administered throughout the state of Texas. Additionally, program researchers have assisted other DOTs and planning entities in the development and analyses of travel surveys.

The types of travel surveys that the Transportation Planning program has experience with include the following:

• Household — used to determine the amount of traffic generated by households of varying demographic levels within an urban area.
• Workplace — are administered to ascertain the amount of travel within an urban area that is generated by major employers, businesses, and retail establishments.
• Commercial Vehicle — used to determine the types of cargos being transported, how many trips are made, and the routes being taken by commercial vehicles within an urban area.
• External — are surveys of motorists that are administered to find out the trip making characteristics of vehicles exiting an urban area.

Researchers in the Transportation Planning program have extensive experience in the development of survey bid specifications, survey data processing, and survey data analyses and expansion.
