LED Enhanced Signs

Researchers: Melisa Finley, Adam Pike, and Jeff Miles

TTI is currently conducting two TxDOT research projects that include evaluations of LED enhanced signs. In project 0-6407, TTI is investigating the effectiveness of LED enhanced stop paddles versus standard, un-lit paddles used by crossing guards. All paddles were 18 inches in diameter and fabricated with high intensity sign sheeting (ASTM Type III). All of the evaluated devices are listed below.

Treatment 1StandardUn-lit

Treatment 28 Flashing RedBorder Lights

Treatment 3aSteady-Burn RedFull Border Lights

Treatment 3bFlashing RedFull Border Lights

Treatment 4Flashing RedVertically Centered

Treatment 5Steady-Burn WhiteForming Legend

In project 0-6462, TTI is evaluating different traffic control device alternatives for use at a rural, stop-controlled intersection along with evaluating reasonable sequence(s) for implementing progressively more expensive devices. One type of traffic control device being investigated is large LED enhanced signs (some examples shown below).
