Sign the Way

The "Sign the Way" module familiarizes students with the principles behind the design and use of traffic signs. Six different activities are provided in this module. These activities accomplish the following:

  1. require students to identify sign meanings and their use;
  2. introduce the idea of time constraints while driving that necessitates the clear and concise presentation of information on traffic signs;
  3. discuss human factors issues regarding the various colors and shapes of traffic signals and signs;
  4. require students to design a new sign using what they have learned;
  5. illustrate the concept of memory and driving; and
  6. use science and math principles in relating speed and legibility issues to sign locations by trying to determine if a vehicle would be able to safely make an exit.
