Center for Transportation Safety
Description
The Center for Transportation Safety (CTS), within the Texas Transportation Institute, was established in 2001 by Texas Senate Bill 586 to conduct research, education, and technology transfer to assist the state in achieving the goal of reducing the overall fatality rate on Texas roadways. Through partnerships with federal and state government agencies and other privately owned organizations, the center conducts innovative research to help reduce traffic crashes, deaths, and injuries and to lessen the economic burden of these crashes in Texas and the nation.
The CTS is comprised of the following research groups:
Mission
The mission of the CTS is to serve as a focal point for traffic safety research, policy analysis, education, and outreach in Texas by
- Educating - Providing students hands-on training and guidance in transportation safety and safety-related research;
- Collaborating - Promoting the collaboration of professionals from different disciplines in the cause of transportation safety;
- Analyzing - Conducting research to reduce the deaths and injuries associated with transportation in all its modes;
- Evaluating - Assessing the effectiveness of different plans, programs, and policies that have been implemented to reduce transportation-related deaths and injuries;
- Sharing - Providing safety information to other professionals and the public; and
- Distributing - Serving as a resource to the Legislature and various state agencies by developing new plans, programs, and policies that have the potential to reduce transportation-related deaths and injuries in Texas.
Expertise
CTS researchers have vast experience and skills in the following areas:
- statistical analysis of crash data and crash modeling,
- survey and focus group research,
- man-machine interactions (human factors),
- roadway safety, and
- policy and program evaluation.
Center researchers investigate issues related to driver distraction, young driver initiatives, occupant restraint use, alcohol and crashes, motorcycle safety, roadway design, and pedestrian safety.
