Major Highway Structures

Description

The Major Highway Structures Program works to develop new and innovative methods to analyze, design, construct, maintain, and manage the diverse types of structures and structural components that are part of the nation's transportation network. These structures include many types of bridges, culverts, sign bridges, abutments, pilings, drilled shafts, piers, approach slabs, bearing, and anchorage systems.

Expertise

Researchers in the Major Highway Structures Program have extensive expertise in the following areas:

  • analysis, experimental testing, and design of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and composite steel-concrete structures;
  • performance-based wind and earthquake engineering;
  • finite element analysis; composite materials;
  • buildings and bridges;
  • active and semi-active control of structures; and
  • engineering uses of recycled materials.

The projects researched by the Major Highway Structures Program are primarily funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
