Short Biography

Dr. Lord has been an Associate Research Scientist with the Center for Transportation Safety at the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) since October 2001. Dr. Lord holds a B.Eng. (1992) in Civil Engineering from McGill University, and an M.A.Sc. (1994) and Ph.D. (2000) from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining TTI, Dr. Lord was a research associate with Ryerson University in Canada.

Over the last ten years, Dr. Lord has participated in numerous traffic safety studies as researcher and consultant in Canada. He has led studies on the development of safety performance functions, pedestrian safety, the application of traffic conflicts at signalized intersections and the investigation of safety issues for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology. Recently, he had the opportunity to participate in an award-winning research study on the application the Empirical Bayes (EB) methods to estimate the safety benefits of installing roundabouts at intersections. He also participated in an important study on the evaluation of the Manitoba Driver Education Program for high school students. In 2000, Dr. Lord lead a traffic safety study in Burkina Faso, Western Africa, that incorporated the application of the latest state-of-the-art safety methods to identify hazardous roadway segments located in rural areas. He led a seminal study on the safety and operational improvements resulting from right turn on red on the behalf of the Quebec Department of Transportation in 2001. The outcome of the study has been used to implement a new transportation policy in Quebec.

Dr. Lord has excellent knowledge of the latest statistical methods used for the modelling of crash data, the estimation of crash risk for individual drivers and highway segments, and the evaluation of treatments for the reduction of crashes on transportation networks. He also has a great understanding of other areas of traffic safety, such as the collection process of crash data, safety audits, human factors as principally applied towards pedestrians, and traffic flow theory. He has published refereed papers in numerous journals and international conferences.

Dr. Lord primary fields of interest are conducting fundamental research on accident analysis methodology, statistical modeling of crash data and evaluation techniques. He is currently working as a researcher on studies related to in-service evaluation of roadside safety features, median barrier guidelines and rollover crashes sponsored by organizations such the Texas Department of Transportation and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program.

Dr. Lord, who is the recipient of the Transportation Research Board D. Grant Mickle, the 2000 Canadian Association of Road Safety Professional Best Paper Award and the TRB A3B05 2003 Young Research Award, is a registered Professional Engineer in both the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
