Short Biography

Dr. Bonneson has been involved with transportation consulting, education, and research since 1984. He spent his first three years as a consulting engineer conducting various traffic operations, safety, parking, and impact studies. He also participated in the conceptual planning and design of both urban and rural roadways. He spent the next nine years as a civil engineering educator. He has taught courses in surveying, systems engineering, traffic engineering, and highway geometric design. Most recently, he has been conducting research full-time in areas related to traffic signal control and highway design. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Nebraska and Texas.

Dr. Bonneson has had significant involvement in several large research projects for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). Specifically, he was responsible for model development, data collection, and data analysis for NCHRP Project 3-58, Assessing Traffic Control Signal Installations Using Capacity Analysis and Simulation; NCHRP Project 15-16, Superelevation Distribution Methods and Transition Designs; NCHRP Project 3-49, Capacity and Operational Effects of Midblock Left-Turn Lanes; and NCHRP Project 3-40, Single Point Urban Interchange Design and Operation.

Dr. Bonneson is a member of the Transportation Research Board's (TRB) Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee. He is also a past member of TRB Committee A3A11, Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics and the ASCE committee on Geometric Design and Operational Effects. He is also author of a book, Manual of Traffic Detector Design and has developed and successfully distributed computer software for analyzing signalized intersection operation.
