Conversion of Two Lane Rural Roadways to Four Lane Roadways

Project Description

The selection of the cross-section for a roadway is a critical decision in the design process. This decision substantially impacts safety, capacity, and cost. Although capacity and cost considerations are generally readily evaluated, the impact of the cross-section on safety is not always apparent. Previous studies have provided some information with respect to various roadway configurations; however, additional comparisons are needed. Providing additional information about the safety effects of providing shoulders, selecting an appropriate median type, and providing left turn lanes at intersections will help designers to choose appropriate cross-sections when they consider expanding a rural two-lane roadway.
