Designing Asphalt Overlays for Cracked Pavements in Houston
Project Description
TTI used its unique nondestructive testing capabilities and in-house hot-mix asphalt (HMA) testing equipment to evaluate, prepare, test, and make project-specific recommendations on new asphalt overlays for the Houston District. These mixes are intended for use on cracked flexible and concrete pavements. The mixes include porous friction courses, crack-retarding layers (screenings mix), and traditions dense-graded mixes with a variety of modified binders. To evaluate these projects TTI used an array of nondestructive testing equipment such as rolling deflectometers, ground-penetrating radar, and falling weight deflectometers. Field coring and additional laboratory testing were used where and when required. TTI¿s new overlay tester was used to design mixes that are resistant to thermally induced reflection cracks.
