Hurricane Evacuation Planning and Support to TxDOT Houston and TxDOT Beaumont Districts

Project Description

Record hurricane activity in 2005 and the evacuations surrounding Hurricanes Katrina and Rita spurred an energetic response from TxDOT to plan for future hurricane evacuation events. The TxDOT Houston and Beaumont Districts turned to the TTI Houston Office to assist them with evacuation planning (including contraflow) and demonstrating the potential for the use of low-cost, rapid deployment ITS devices during evacuation events. This effort included facilitation of meetings between multiple TxDOT Districts and DPS regions. It also included the review of national practices in evacuation events and the transfer of a lessons-learned evaluation in the context of contraflow planning on critical evacuation routes for Southeast Texas residents.
