National Highway Institute Course 152071, "Estimating Regional Mobile Source Emissions"
Project Description
Technical transportation courses have historically contained excellent subject matter for both introductory and advanced training courses. In order to ensure educational quality, the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) subject matter experts teamed with instructional design personnel to develop the National Highway Institute (NHI) Course 152071A, "Estimating Regional Mobile Source Emissions." This approach ensured that both subject matter and instructional design were combined into an effective training product. The principles of adult learning were incorporated into course delivery. For example, since adults learn because they have curiosity or a problem to solve, it is important for the instructor to pose questions and use case studies that spark the participants' curiosity in the subject. It is also important for instructors to get participants to share their own experiences on the subject because adult learners benefit from real-world examples that they can relate back to their own experience and situation. Adult learners also appreciate a structure and organization to the learning process, and the use of the participant notebook and the instructor guide is very important to course delivery. The TTI instruction team recognizes that different adults have different preferred styles of learning. Some learners are very visual and graphic oriented, while some are more aural/spoken, and others may be more tactile or physical learners. Knowing these differences exist, the instructors will use a variety of instructional techniques that match learners' styles to accomplish the learning outcomes. As a general practice, the TTI team will follow training practices and recommendations in the Circle of Learning publication from NHI, and principles and practices presented in the NHI Instructor Development Certification Course.
