A Guide to Transportation Funding Options

Project Description

As our nation's transportation demand continues to grow due to population increases and an expanded economy, elected officials face difficult decisions to adequately fund the maintenance and expansion of transportation systems. This project produced a concise, user-friendly website for policy makers that describes the array of transportation funding options that are or may be available for use throughout the country. The first phase concentrated on highway funding but planned website expansion will cover transit services, passenger rail, freight rail, and ports and waterways.

The website consolidates information available from various sources into clear, non-technical language.

The website's "one-stop shop" approach for relevant information provides:

  • available data sources, such as the recent report from the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission;
  • current forms of surface transportation finance that indicate where they are being used,
  • innovative financing techniques that are used in limited capacities;
  • proposed legislation for additional financing tools;
  • links related to various techniques, sample legislation, specific programs and commentary that provide additional information and insight; and
  • potential financing techniques being considered for the future that may not actually be in practice at this point.

A current and accurate transportation finance website such as the one produced by this project serves as a useful tool for decision-makers, policy-makers and other users. Including all modes of surface transportation will expand the universe of users and educate them on transportation finance.
