Best Practices and Outreach for Active Traffic Management
Project Description
Active traffic management (ATM) strategies, which are more popular in Europe than the U.S., increase capacity and safety on roadways without having to widen them. The project team developed a website disseminating information on ATM. The ATM website is database driven to facilitate easy updating by staff when related documents, links, and information are available. The ATM website includes several key sections to provide key information for users:
- a main page that provides a brief overview of Active Traffic Management and provides links to the main sections and a request for feedback from users if appropriate;
- a resources page that provides a variety of resources, including documents, presentations, references, related websites, and an inventory of ATM operational facilities in the United States and overseas;
- an ATM glossary that provides a list of commonly used terms related to ATM along with brief definitions for each; and
- a contact page with which users can provide feedback to the team regarding any aspect of the site.
By providing transportation agencies with information on practices for deployment and operation of ATM strategies as well as general guidance on implementation, this document can have a positive impact on transportation networks where ATM is feasible. ATM has the potential to help transportation agencies address the ever-increasing challenge of doing more with less and operating existing facilities in the most efficient manner possible.
