Use of Recycled Asphalt Pavement and Crushed Concrete as Backfill for Mechanically Stabilized Earth Retaining Walls
Project Description
This project evaluated the potential use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and crushed concrete (CC) as backfill for mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls. The geotechnical properties (research performed at The University of Texas at Austin) and corrosivity of these materials were assessed. The research found that CC can be used as a backfill material for MSE walls with some conditions. RAP should not be used. Using CC as a backfill material can reduce the cost of MSE wall construction, providing cost savings for the taxpayers.
