Abstract:

The Texas Department of Transportation has initiated a two-year field test of seventeen types of retroreflective raised pavement markers (RRPMs). The RRPMs were installed at four freeway facilities in District 15 (San Antonio) in August 1992. A sample of RRPMs is removed from the sites periodically to assess reflectivity retention of each type of marker. In addition, a portable retroreflectometer is being tested at each site to estimate RRPM reflectivity while still installed on the pavement.|This report summarizes the results of field studies to document traffic conditions at each site. Total volumes, truck volumes, and lane-changing frequencies were all examined in the field studies. The report also documents the RRPM reflectivity measurements at each site when RRPMs are new and after approximately two and four weeks exposure.
