Abstract:

This report describes the work done in the fifth year of a six-year project for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). As part of its proactive commitment to improving highway safety, TxDOT is moving toward including quantitative safety analyses earlier in the project development process. The project¿s objectives are (1) to develop safety design guidelines and evaluation tools to be used by TxDOT designers, and (2) to produce a plan for the incorporation of these guidelines and tools in the planning and design stages of the project development process. Researchers are developing the final version of the Interim Roadway Safety Design Workbook, designed to evaluate the safety impacts of highway geometric design alternatives during the project development process. The updated workbook will include more accurate safety prediction models and will have accompanying workshop education materials for three one-day highway safety design and evaluation workshops.
