Abstract:
This project summary report summarizes the research performed in Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Project 0-5237. This project was designed to help TxDOT in accommodating pedestrians, including the disabled, in temporary traffic control situations. Researchers conducted a state-of-the-practice review. Interviews with state and local agency officials indicated that accommodation of pedestrians could be a concern in the future and that they would need guidelines to aid in handling pedestrians in certain situations. The project created a guidelines checklist to address this need and also conducted several human factors studies focused on the needs of visually impaired pedestrians. These studies resulted in recommendations for pedestrian signing and audio speech messages for visually impaired pedestrians.
