Abstract:

A significant number of the Texas Department of Transportation¿s signalized intersections operate under isolated control, and it is not uncommon for an approaching platoon of vehicles to face a red signal when it arrives at the stop bar. Often, these platoons are forced to stop because of a single vehicle on one of the side-street approaches. This product provides guidelines for using, installing, configuring, and operating the enhanced platoon identification and accommodation (PIA) system. Its intended audience includes traffic signal engineers and technicians who wish to install and operate the system within their respective jurisdictions. The PIA system is useful for signals that face the following traffic conditions during significant parts of a normal day:
  • Platoons of vehicles arrive at one or both of the main-street approaches.
  • There is light demand for movements being serviced by phases conflicting with the main-street phases.
  • The traffic signal faces varying and unpredictable demand levels.
