Abstract:

This series of presentations provides an overview of thermal profiling and Pave-IR. The Texas Department of Transportation implemented Pave-IR to promote higher quality pavements, minimize thermal segregation, and expand the range of weather conditions for paving. The presentation reviews what thermal segregation is and how it impacts pavement performance. Pave-IR provides real-time feedback and full coverage testing of new hot- or warm-mix asphalt construction while not requiring constant operator attendance. The presentation also provides best practices for implementing Pave-IR. Pave-IR is currently in use in several U.S. states with international interest expressed by the province of Quebec, Germany, and China.
