Abstract:
- Enhance traveler information in urban areas such as: o Travel-time information., o Levels of congestion. o Speed measurement. o Alternative routes.
- Introduce traveler information in areas where intelligent transportation system (ITS) deployment is not cost-effective.
- Improve continuity of data based on existing ITS coverage across jurisdictions.
- Develop a statewide 511 system.
- Reduce ITS deployment costs by limiting deployment of fixed data-collection devices. Researchers recommend that TxDOT select two or more providers of private-sector data and select a trial network that already has a means of verification or could easily be modified to serve that purpose. This might be a corridor with sufficient fixed sensors, probe vehicles, toll readers, or Bluetooth devices.
