Abstract:

This report presents recommendations for the development of two different low-profile to safety-shape transitions. The first transition involves the use of a special concrete barrier section which connects directly to the low-profile and safety-shape barrier sections. In the other transition scheme, the low-profile and safety-shape barriers are butted together and then connected through the use of special steel hardware. Preliminary design details presented allow either concept to be fabricated. Also, recommendations for the use and deployment of the safety-shape transitions are presented. Finally, recommendations are presented for evaluation of the two different transition concepts through full-scale crash testing.
