Guidelines on the Use of RAP in Routine Maintenance Activities (1272-2F)

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) uses cold milling of asphalt pavements (a common rehabilitation procedure) to correct surface irregularities, maintain curblines, or remove a poor-quality pavement.|Since the original asphalt pavement material previously met all the quality standards required by TxDOT, finding uses for the millings makes economical sense. Recognizing this, the Department has developed many innovative uses for Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP).|The objective of this manual is to provide maintenance personnel with guidelines on using stockpiled RAP in routine maintenance operations, with minimal to no laboratory testing and minimal material processing and handling. Minimizing the testing and processing should keep the cost of the recycled mix well below that of new maintenance mixes, making it an attractive maintenance material.
