Texas leads the nation in terms of tonnage of maritime cargo handled, and TTI research results contribute to the improved safety, economic vitality, and mobility of water transportation. Research into water transportation issues is conducted by researchers across TTI, with targeted projects located especially at the Center for Ports & Waterways and in the multimodal and structural systems program areas of the agency. TTI experts study related topics such as commercial freight flow, intermodal connections, security, environmental impacts, and potential markets.
The Center for Ports & Waterways, housed in Houston and established in 1995, conducts applied research that advances knowledge in the area of water transportation nationwide. The Southwest Region University Transportation Center brings together national leaders in transportation research and education to study innovative solutions and establish educational outreach programs in a balanced program of multimodal projects.
