Rule Statement

Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) provides part-time work opportunities to students who wish to further their formal education through practical work experience. To be eligible for part-time employment by TTI, a student must maintain an academic record acceptable to the employing TTI program.

Reason for Rule

This rule defines the employment provisions for student employees and the provisions for hiring them. This rule also defines the various types of student employees hired by TTI.

Procedures and Responsibilities

1. Employment Provisions

1.1 Student employees should not work during the hours they are scheduled to be in class.

1.2 Student employees need not be enrolled during the summer in order to maintain student employee status, as long as they intend to enroll for the following fall term.

1.3 Student employees may work full-time during interim periods and during the summer. In accordance with System Regulation 31.01.02, Fair Labor Standards, non-exempt student employees are eligible to be paid overtime for hours worked over 40 in a workweek should the occasion arise.

Only students with advanced approval from their respective institution’s student financial aid officer may be hired in Work Study title codes. Eligible students will present a Work Study Certificate to the hiring unit.

1.4 Employment of international students will be in accordance with System Regulation 33.99.09, Employment of Foreign Nationals.

1.5 The hiring unit has the discretion to determine the hiring rates for student employees following the guidance of the student employee starting rates provided by the Student Employee Wage Rate Table. Student employees will be assigned to job titles and pay ranges based on the duties and responsibilities of the position. Wages paid to students will be based on job duties and the students’ previous experience, degree of skill, longevity and required level of supervision.

2. Employment Procedures

2.1 Employment for student workers, non-affiliated student workers and student trainees/interns will follow the TTI Undergraduate Student Employment Procedures.

Employment for work study students will follow the requirements and guidelines consistent with applicable regulations and in coordination with respective institution’s student financial aid offices.
