Sixteen incoming Texas A&M University engineering freshmen visited the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) on June 26, 2025, as part of Camp BUILD — a weeklong summer program hosted by the Texas A&M University Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Designed for students entering the College of Engineering, the camp offers an early look at civil engineering as both a major and career path.

During their visit, students were introduced to the world of transportation research. The day began with an overview of the TTI’s work, where students learned about job opportunities and how our experts conduct research.

The visit continued with a crash test presentation that set the stage for a hands-on engineering challenge. Students worked in teams designing and building crash cushions using recyclable materials, then tested their creations by launching a bowling ball to simulate a crash.

The visit concluded with a puff mobile challenge. Students built and raced wind-powered cars using four LifeSaver candies, three straws, a piece of paper, two paper clips, tape and scissors.

“It is always great to engage with the next generation of engineers,” said Melisa Finley, head of TTI’s Transportation Operations and Roadway Safety Division. “I love watching them be challenged but also having fun executing a solution.”
