Transportation Leader Joins TTI

October 12, 2009

Bryan Wood, the former Bryan, Texas, district engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has joined the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) effective October 1.

Wood has been named head of TTI’s Constructed Facilities Division overseeing three programs involved in various aspects of infrastructure, including materials and design, construction techniques and repair and rehabilitation methods.

“Bryan Wood has a proven track record of leadership and expertise and is very familiar with TTI and our research programs,” says TTI Agency Director Dennis Christiansen. “He has addressed numerous transportation challenges during his career, and he is a perfect fit for the Institute.”

“This is a certainly a change of direction and a great opportunity,” Wood said. “I got a taste of the world of research when I obtained a masters degree in Civil Engineering while still at TxDOT, and I am very excited about this new and challenging career at TTI.”

Wood, who has 26 years of service at TxDOT, has directed a broad range of transportation challenges related to state, county, city and rural infrastructure, including transportation planning and design and road and bridge construction and maintenance.

Wood has 16 years experience in bridge design and construction, which includes directing the feasibility study for the Harbor Bridge Replacement in Corpus Christi when he served as deputy district engineer and interim district engineer there. His work in bridge research during the construction of the US 183 segmental bridge in Austin led to several changes in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Segmental Bridge Design Guide.

Wood served as district engineer for the Bryan District since 2003, retiring from that position in August. Wood replaces David Trejo, who resigned to accept a faculty position at Oregon State University.
