TTI Receives Green Business Award

June 1, 2017

Keep Brazos Beautiful | Green Business Award | Texas A&M Transportation InstituteFollowing a nomination from an individual in the Bryan-College Station community, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) received the Green Business Award from the Keep Brazos Beautiful (KBB) organization during its annual awards luncheon May 17.

The Green Business Award “is given to a local business that incorporates green practices, consciously conserves resources or demonstrates environmental stewardship.”

In announcing the award, KBB pointed to TTI’s research project that monitors the activity, and studies fuel consumption and emissions, of the Texas A&M University bus fleet. A team of researchers from TTI’s Environment and Air Quality Division, headed up by Senior Research Engineer Joe Zietsman, is working in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on this project. The bus study is part of the Campus Transportation Technology Initiative.

“It is an honor for our team to be recognized by the community, especially by Keep Brazos Beautiful,” Zietsman said. “Awards like this one let our group know that the work we do is worthy of recognition, and our efforts to improve the environment in which we live is important to all of us.”

The study will analyze the data gathered from the drive cycles of the Texas A&M bus fleet, which has the potential to improve the efficiency of the system. Specifically, the project could lead to more efficient route planning and driver-behavior training. The project will provide a much better understanding of the actual driving patterns and emissions from a transit system, like Texas A&M’s.
