An Arizona Department of Transportation research study, conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, about pedestrian hybrid beacons received a national award from the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
The study (external link) evaluated the pedestrian hybrid beacon (external link), which is a traffic control device that increases drivers’ awareness of pedestrians crossing at uncontrolled marked crosswalks. This special type of traffic control device uses a system of beacon lights along with signs to alert drivers and control vehicle traffic.
