Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to present the major findings an recommendations of a University of Texas (UT) commuter research study that (1) Examined the demographic, employment, and overall travel characteristics of Austin area commuters, and analyzing how these characteristics impact commute travel choices and perceptions, (2) Developed a framework for evaluating the effect of alternative congestion alleviation strategies on commute mode choice, and (3) Identified broad and important issues that have to be recognized when designing and analyzing a comprehensive mobility plan for Austin. The UT research study was based on a web-based survey of Austin area commuters undertaken between December 2003 and March 2004. The data from the web-based survey was weighted appropriately to be representative of the Austin area commuter population.
