Abstract:
The Texas Type T202 Bridge Rail is a popular concrete beam-and-post system in the state of Texas. The Texas Type T202 was previously crash tested and evaluated under NCHRP Report 230 guidelines. With the adoption of NCHRP Report 350, the bridge rail needed to be re-evaluated under the new guidelines. This report presents the details and results of the full-scale crash tests performed on the Texas Type T202 Bridge Rail.
In the first test on the Texas Type T202, which has a 38 mm post setback, the small car sustained significant occupant compartment deformation, which was judged to have the potential to cause serious injury to the occupant. A second small-car test was performed on a modified Texas Type T202 Bridge Rail with a 114 mm post setback. During this test, the bridge rail met all criteria for NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-10. In a subsequent test with a 2000 kg pickup truck, the modified bridge rail with 114 mm post setback met all required criteria for NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-11.
