Dr. Sushant Sharma is a Research Scientist and Assistant Program Manager in the Multimodal Freight Program and is stationed in the Dallas–Fort Worth region. Dr. Sharma has expertise in freight planning and modeling, developing, and employing artificial intelligence and machine learning tools big and emerging data sets, transportation network modeling and routing, highway safety and traffic operations. Over the last decade, he has led or worked on numerous research and consulting projects sponsored by FHWA, NCHRP, SHRP 2, UTCs, and State DOTs (INDOT, TxDOT, etc.). Dr. Sharma has led and participated in several research/implementation projects and Interagency Cooperation (IAC) Contracts tasks that involve freight, traffic operations, safety, and ITS.

An accomplished author, Dr. Sharma has contributed to a book chapter, authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings, and prepared 30 technical and research reports covering a wide array of topics from traffic safety and real-time operations to freight planning and GIS data integration.

Dr. Sharma has a Project Management (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute and has been involved in project management planning, monitoring, and tracking activities tied to research projects.  

In leadership roles, he serves as Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Freight and Logistics Planning and Modeling Committee (AT012). From 2020 to 2025, he chaired the TRB Freight Transportation Planning and Logistics Committee (AT015) and contributed as a member to several other TRB committees. Internationally, he leads the Freight Transport Modeling Group within the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS). Dr. Sharma is a Senior Associate Editor of Transportation Research Records and serves as a reviewer and subject matter expert for nearly all transportation research-related journals. The TRB Committee led by Dr. Sharma received the 2023 and 2024 Blue Ribbon Awards for implementing research into practice and promoting committee membership. Dr. Sharma also received a Best Researcher Award from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute in 2023.
