Abstract
This study is based on cost data and managerial opinion information gathered by personal interviews from thirteen selected private motor carriers within the state of Texas. These firms are divided among eight different types of industries. Cost records of approximately 300 private motor carriers in the state were reviewed in the selection of these firms.|In general, the firms that were included in this study received most of their incoming goods from out of state, but had an intrastate distribution pattern. This was largely due to the fact that many of the raw materials and supplies were located outside of the state, whereas the major markets for the finished products were within the state of Texas. The major use of the sampled firms' truck fleets was in intercity operations as contrasted to local city movements. The overall operations of the respondent firms were not of the types that would be conducive to large amounts of local or intracity movement.|It is believed by management of the studied firms, that the major advantages of operating privatelyowned trucks as compared to hired transportation are as follows: (1) more economical for the shipper; (2) better service to the firms' customers; (3) handier and more convenient and (4) more flexibility. The major disadvantages are believed to be: (1) larger capital investment required and ( 2 ) various labor problems encountered.
