Dr. Darren Torbic is a member of the Traffic Operations and Roadway Safety Division at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI). He has over 30 years of research experience in the areas of highway safety, geometric design, traffic engineering, and pedestrian and bicycle transportation. He has served as principal investigator (PI) on over 25 research projects for NCHRP, FHWA, and AASHTO. Dr. Torbic is the author or co-author of over 80 technical papers or research reports, 12 of which are referenced in the first edition of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and 15 of which are referenced in the 2018 Green Book. Dr. Torbic was the recipient of the 2013 TRB D. Grant Mickle Award given annually for the outstanding paper published in the field of operation, safety, and maintenance of transportation facilities. In addition, he has won the outstanding paper award four times from three separate TRB committees. Most recently he led the production contract for NCHRP to develop and prepare the draft content for the second edition of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM2).
