Thomas C. Lambert — former president and CEO of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Houston METRO) — was inducted into the Texas Transportation Hall of Honor on June 12 during a ceremony at the Omni Houston Hotel.
The Hall of Honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of transportation in Texas through their dedication, vision and leadership. Lambert has demonstrated these qualities throughout his career in the transportation sector.
Under his guidance, Houston METRO — which serves the Houston metropolitan area — has flourished as one of the nation’s most innovative and efficient public transportation systems. His 40 years of leadership transformed the agency into a model for sustainable urban mobility, promoting economic development, enhancing accessibility and reducing environmental impacts.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized and to join the ranks of esteemed individuals who have contributed to the advancement of transportation in our great state,” Lambert said. “I have been fortunate to work alongside a dedicated team at Houston METRO — as well as countless partners — who share a vision for a more accessible and interconnected Texas.”
Recounting Lambert’s many accomplishments were friends and colleagues who had the pleasure of working closely with him throughout his career. Lambert is known for successfully balancing regional, urban, and suburban issues; he helped revitalize communities, spur economic activity, and improve connectivity through Houston METRO initiatives. These initiatives included launching the New Bus Network, expanding METRORail by adding the Green and Purple lines, bringing bus rapid transit technology to the region with the METRORapid Silver Line, and providing the agency’s first on-demand, personalized service with its curb2curb shuttles.
Lambert joins 51 exceptional leaders who have been inducted into the Texas Transportation Hall of Honor for their leadership and contributions, which have improved the lives of countless Texans and set an example for the entire industry.
