Short Biography
Dr. Haneen Khreis is a multidisciplinary researcher specializing in the health impacts of urban mobility, with a particular focus on the effects of traffic-related air pollution. She holds dual appointments as a Research Scientist at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and its Center for Advancing Research in Transportation Emissions, Energy, and Health (CARTEEH): https://www.carteeh.org/ and as a Senior Research Associate at the MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine https://www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/.
Dr. Khreis's extensive expertise encompasses transport planning and engineering, vehicle emissions modeling, air quality monitoring and modeling, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and health impact assessments, including burden of disease evaluations. She is adept in policy development, particularly in generating and selecting policy options to achieve air quality objectives and navigating the science-policy interface.
Her contributions to elucidating and communicating the connections between air pollution exposure and chronic diseases are evident through her epidemiological research, burden of disease assessments, and monetization studies. Dr. Khreis has a portfolio of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and technical reports.
She has edited three seminal books: "Traffic-Related Air Pollution," "Advances in Transportation and Health," and "Integrating Human Health into Urban and Transport Planning." Additionally, she developed a comprehensive cross-disciplinary curriculum titled "Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Emissions, Human Exposures, and Health." Her research has attracted attention from major media outlets, including U.S. News & World Report, The Dallas Morning News, The Guardian, BBC News, and The Times.
Dr. Khreis serves on the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP), the body advising the UK government on health matters related to air pollutants. She is also a member of COMEAP's standing quantification sub-group (QUARK), which addresses methodological issues in using epidemiology to quantify the health impacts of air pollutants and provides specific recommendations for quantification.
Passionate about promoting human health, Dr. Khreis dedicates her work to education, workforce development, and creating evidence-based planning and policy solutions for urban health challenges. She enjoys exploring her adopted home of New Orleans on her trusty E-bike, embracing a car-free lifestyle and the joys of urban mobility.
