Success

The problem:

As Texas grows, so does gridlock. With travel demand increasing and road capacity lagging behind, the state needed a consistent way to measure where congestion hits hardest.

Our approach:

Each year, TTI leads the analysis of nearly 1,800 roadways to identify the 100 most congested segments across Texas. Using detailed traffic volume and speed data, we quantify delays, truck impacts and commuter costs. Our analysis helps the Texas Department of Transportation prioritize projects and target congestion relief where it’s most needed.

The Outcome:

TTI’s research plays a direct role in guiding TxDOT’s Texas Clear Lanes initiative and other mobility efforts. In 2024, our findings showed that despite a 7% increase in travel, delays dropped 7%, saving Texans $915 million in time and fuel. The report continues to influence funding decisions, construction priorities and policy strategies statewide.
