Roadside Safety and Physical Security

Research performed at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Proving Ground has saved lives for more than 50 years. The 2,000-acre research and training facility in Central Texas is home to TTI’s Roadside Safety and Physical Security Division. Leading transportation scholars and engineers conduct safety research at this world-renowned complex of crash-test facilities and research labs.

Center for Transportation Safety

The Center for Transportation Safety conducts education, technology transfer, and research programs to support improving the safety of roadways in Texas and the United States.

Lance Bullard

Safety group

Lance leads TTI’s Safety Research Group and serves as division head of the Roadside Safety and Physical Security Division. He directs the TTI Proving Ground, which tests roadside safety devices (guardrails and terminals, bridge rails, crash cushions and breakaway sign supports) and perimeter security devices (gates, fences and bollards).

  • Conducted more than 2,000 crash tests with vehicles ranging from motorcycles to 80,000-pound tractor-trailers.
  • Holds over 30 U.S. and numerous international patents for roadside safety hardware innovations.
  • Licensed professional engineer in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and Washington with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, a Bachelor of Science in mechanized agriculture and a Master of Science in civil engineering, all from Texas A&M University.
