AGC Texas leader named to state’s Transportation Hall of Honor

June 5, 2006

AUSTIN – Thomas L. Johnson, Sr., Executive Vice President of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Texas, will be the 21st person inducted into the Texas Transportation Hall of Honor. Transportation officials with honor Johnson on Wednesday, June 7, during a 10:30 a.m. ceremony at the Dewitt C. Greer Building, located at 125 East 11th Street in Austin.

AGC of Texas is the state branch of the national non-profit trade association representing highway builders. Johnson joined the association staff in 1967 and was named to its top post in 1970.

The Texas Transportation Hall of Honor, established in 2000 by the Texas Transportation Institute, was set up to recognize in a formal and permanent manner those visionary leaders who have helped to provide Texas with an outstanding transportation system. TTI Deputy Director Dennis Christiansen says Johnson epitomizes the qualities of leaders that the Hall of Honor seeks to recognize.

“Tom Johnson’s work with highway commissioners, state and federal elected officials, as well as the executive branch of government has helped give the construction industry in Texas the best market and working conditions in the nation,” Christiansen said in announcing Johnson’s induction. “Past, present and future Texans owe many thanks to Tom for the impact he’s had on our great state.”

In addition to his more than three decades of leadership of AGC of Texas, Johnson has served in a wide range of civic and state leadership positions, and was appointed by Interior Secretary Gale Norton, at the request of President George W. Bush, to the Board of Directors of the National Park Foundation.
