Mr. Ettelman is an Assistant Research Scientist at TTI, where he utilizes a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods to assist TTI sponsors in the transportation decision-making process. Mr. Ettelman’s area of research expertise includes transportation planning, public involvement and transportation policy analysis. Most recently, Mr. Ettelman led research for TTI’s Policy Research Center that focused on how transportation affects healthy aging for Texans. In addition, Mr. Ettelman led research for that identified the transportation preferences of highly skilled workers and was a key researcher in documenting in work that documented the policy implications of transportation network companies.
Mr. Ettelman has also led and supported a range of transportation research that focuses on developing best practices for engaging the public in planning processes. Projects include the development of TxDOT’s Public Involvement Guidebook; the development and implementation of a pilot virtual open house for TxDOT; sentiment and qualitative analysis for the Texas Transportation Poll; as well as researching the development of an online community for the Texas Legislature.
Mr. Ettelman has led and supported numerous transportation planning efforts for TTI sponsors, including the development of the Lee and Llano County Transportation and Economic Development plans; and the development of project prioritization processes for TxDOT’s San Antonio and Midland-Odessa Districts. Mr. Ettelman provides research support and oversight for a range of local, regional and national transit projects, including establishing best practices for contracting commuter rail services; developing and evaluating bus-crash safety countermeasures; and developing transit need analyses for the aging and disabled population. Mr. Ettelman also leads and supports the design, programming, implementation and analysis of numerous public opinion research projects for a range of TTI sponsors. In addition, Mr. Ettelman also has experience designing and conducting website usability studies for TTI sponsors including TxDOT and CTRMA.
Prior to joining TTI, Mr. Ettelman was a public involvement planner for a private consulting firm in Portland, Maine. Mr. Ettelman holds a Masters of Science in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas, Austin. Mr. Ettelman is a member of the American Planning Association (APA) and the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2).
