Short Biography

Dr. Susan Chrysler is a human factors psychologist and senior research scientist at TTI in the Traffic Operations Group. She also serves as associate director of a National Safety University Transportation Center, Safe-D, which leverages disruptive technology to improve roadway safety.

Sue’s areas of expertise include human factors, driving simulation, driver behavior, visual attention, traffic operations, visibility, and photometry. She has served as principal investigator or task leader on over forty projects on visibility, driving simulation, driver distraction, vehicle safety, traffic sign design and comprehension, pavement marking effectiveness, and traffic operations. Sue began her career in 1993 at the 3M Company Traffic Control Materials Division laboratory working with human response to retroreflective materials. She did product development research for traffic sign, pavement marking, and license plate retroreflective materials, resulting in two patents. She returned to TTI in 2014 after three years at the University of Iowa as the director of research at the National Advanced Driving Simulator. She established the Safer-Sim University Transportation Center in 2013 through a USDOT grant and served as its director.

Sue has been a thought leader in professional societies and standards committees, including several National Academies of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board committees. She is the immediate past chair of committee AND10 Vehicle User Characteristics and a member of AND20 User Information Systems. Her past TRB contributions include leading three Human Factors Workshops, chairing the Visibility Symposium, and serving on two NCHRP panels. She has served on the planning committee for the TRB Workshop on Highway Vehicle Automation and the Data Safety and Monitoring Board for the SHRP2 Safety study. She is past chairperson of Human Factors Resources and currently serves as a member of the Regulatory and Warning Sign Technical Committee. She is the past chairperson of the Surface Transportation Technical Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. She is a reviewer for Human Factors, Accident Analysis and Prevention, and Transportation Research Part F. She has also served as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy.
